Remember, you will have a better finished product working close to the project. Firing water over long distances decreases PSI and reduces machine efficiency.
Let’s look at the anatomy of a pressure washer. All pressure washers have some basic components. First, they have an engine or, in the case of electric pressure washers, an engine. This mechanism drives the pump. The pump is what pressurizes the water. For engines and motors, what you have to look at is the power. The higher the power, the more PSI the pump can deliver. The higher the power, the less stress the engine has to endure to operate.
Gas engines are the most common. They have some pros and cons, though. They’re heavy in weight. In addition, gas engines require maintenance. They need periodic oil and filter changes. They also tend to vibrate, which means that if you use them on a deck( not recommended), the owner will feel the whole house shaking. In addition, gas engines tend to be noisy.
Electric motors have appeared recently, and they are much quieter. They do not require maintenance and can be somewhat lighter and easier to maneuver. However, they require an enormous amount of energy to operate. Most need a designated Circuit of 20 amps to draw an average of 17 amps, excluding the initial draw. Therefore, depending on the way a house is wired, you may find yourself tripping over some switches. In addition, they should not be used with extension cords larger than 10 gauge. If you use something higher, you risk burning the engine. Electric motors are somewhat more expensive, but not as expensive as diesel. Diesel engines are about twice the cost of a gasoline engine. As time goes on, we believe that electric motors will become more and more frequent.
The next important component is the pump. Again, the pump is what pressurizes the water. Pumps also often require some maintenance. If you store the pump in a place that can be frozen, you will have to winter. Otherwise, you run the risk of damaging the internal parts. Pumps come in a variety of models. Some are oscillations, some are axial, and some are camshafts. Camshaft driven pumps are optimal. Many also have features such as chemical injectors. This feature is pleasant as it allows the operator to apply cleaning solutions through the machine pumps. The injector is a huge time saver, however some chemicals can damage or corrode the internal parts. Another thing to consider when looking at the pumps is the connection it has to the engine. Direct drive is common now, but there are still some out there that run on an indirect or belt system. Direct drive is the most efficient as there are no straps to slide. However, when a direct drive breaks, it usually requires you to send the whole machine to the manufacturer for repair. Most pumps are contained in an aluminum housing. The casing is good because it reduces the overall weight of the machine, but reacts badly with some chemicals. More on that later.
Next, you have the high pressure hose. This item is standard on all pressure washers. It is usually 3/8 ” fabric woven and rubber coated. Today’s hoses usually come with a quick connect coupler, which allows for easy assembly. The most important thing to pay attention with the hose is its condition. Remember, there’s pressurized water on that line. A weak spot or crack can cause serious harm to you or an object. The other thing to pay attention to is dialing. Hoses tend to leave marks. The rubber lining tends to deteriorate, and pump vibrations can leave black marks on the entire finished product, if you are not careful. Now they have hoses that don’t mark. If you are a deck finishing contractor, it is worth the investment to purchase some of these hoses.
The final two components are the weapon and the spear. The weapon is the on / off switch. Guns are very important. If you remember the above, a chemical and aluminum reaction was mentioned. The internal components of the gun are susceptible to corrosion if chemicals are passed directly through the pump using the chemical injectors. Most guns have brass parts and these are good, but depending on the chemicals you use, you may want to invest in a gun with stainless steel internal parts. Weapons should always be checked for good working conditions. If the weapon malfunctions, you risk serious injury.
The spear is actually a two-part component. The wand, which is the shaft, is usually metal (aluminum) and comes in a variety of lengths. The standard wand is 36 inches. But, if you need more time, say for balustrades or balcony fascia, you might want to buy an extension wand. The last part of the Lance is the nozzle. The nozzle focuses pressurized water into a stream. Nozzles come in a variety of sizes and styles. They are also a very important component of a pressure washer. The choice on the nozzle depends mainly on the task you want to perform. Nozzle types vary by machine type and manufacturer. Most nozzles contain two sets of numbers. The first set of numbers indicates the size of the capacity. This is the diameter that water enters the nozzle. The second set of numbers indicates the spray angle in degrees that water comes out of the nozzle. A zero degree expels water into a stream. This nozzle has forces that will actually penetrate soft materials and are reserved for reaching distant objects such as under eaves. Choosing the right angle for the job is critical to predicting the efficiency and quality of your work. Some additional nozzles include blasters, which deliver multiple streams of water at once. These can be useful for cleaning certain things, but should not be used on decks.
